AC Milan part ways with Algeria midfielder Ismael Bennacer after seven years

Ismael Bennacer leaves AC Milan after seven-year spell
AC Milan have confirmed the departure of midfielder Ismael Bennacer, bringing an end to the Algeria international’s seven-year spell at San Siro.
The Serie A club announced that Bennacer’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent, closing the chapter on the 28-year-old’s time with the Rossoneri.
Bennacer joined AC Milan from Empoli in 2019 and went on to become an important part of the club’s midfield.
However, his time in Milan was disrupted by persistent knee problems, which limited his availability and eventually saw him spend periods on loan at Olympique de Marseille and Dinamo Zagreb.
“AC Milan can confirm the termination of **Ismael Bennacer’s contract by mutual consent,” the club said in a statement.
“The Club would like to wish him all the best for the future.”
Bennacer leaves after 137 Serie A appearances
Bennacer made 137 Serie A appearances for Milan during his seven-year stay and played a key role in their successful 2021/22 campaign.
The Algeria international was an important member of the side that won the Serie A title, with Milan securing their first Scudetto since 2011.
His performances in midfield earned him a reputation as one of the club’s most technically gifted players, capable of controlling the tempo while also contributing defensively.
However, injuries increasingly disrupted his progress at the club. His long-term knee problems severely limited his playing time, and he was unable to establish a consistent run of appearances in recent seasons.
Bennacer’s last competitive appearance for Milan came in 2024, meaning his departure brings an end to a spell that began with considerable promise but was ultimately overshadowed by fitness struggles.
After seven years in Italy, the 28-year-old now becomes a free agent and will be looking for a fresh start as he attempts to rebuild his career and return to regular first-team football.
