Lionel Messi was absent as Inter Miami suffered a 2-1 defeat to visiting Monterrey on Saturday in the Leagues Cup, following the death of his father.

The teams held a minute’s silence before kick-off in honour of Jorge Messi, who passed away in Argentina at the age of 68. Lionel Messi, Inter Miami’s captain, arrived in Argentina on Saturday night following his father’s death.

“Our hearts are with our captain, Leo, and the entire Messi family,” Inter Miami said in a statement.

Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, sending Inter Miami into half-time with a 1-0 lead over the Mexican side.

Monterrey responded shortly after the restart, with Belgian striker Hugo Cuypers finding the net in the 47th minute to level the score.

Uruguayan forward Diego Rossi then completed the comeback in dramatic fashion, scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute to seal a 2-1 victory for Monterrey.

The reigning Major League Soccer champions had opened their Leagues Cup campaign with a 4-2 win over Atletico San Luis. Miami will return to action on Wednesday when they face Leon.
