Manchester United Rescue a Lacklustre Draw at Fulham

Manchester United travelled to Craven Cottage with a strong recent record against Fulham, having avoided defeat in their previous 10 visits to west London, including eight victories.
The Red Devils had also gone unbeaten in their last five meetings with Fulham across all competitions, including encounters at Old Trafford.
Man Utd looking for a reaction after Brighton setback
Following a disappointing display against Brighton in midweek, Manchester United were desperate for a response. They had surrendered a two-goal advantage at home before ultimately suffering a 3-2 defeat at the Theatre of Dreams.
Michael Carrick would therefore have been hoping to see a reaction from his players as they returned to action at Craven Cottage.
Meanwhile, Alvaro Arbeloa was under pressure to produce a positive result for Fulham, with growing concerns surrounding the club’s poor start to the 2026/27 campaign. A strong performance against Manchester United would have offered the hosts an opportunity to ease some of those early-season worries.
Still without a victory this season, Fulham had also suffered defeats in both of their home fixtures, losing 3-2 to Chelsea and Crystal Palace.
Those results left the Cottagers hovering near the foot of the table, with only Coventry and Tottenham below them due to their own winless and goalless starts heading into the latest round of fixtures.
However, Coventry’s first win of the campaign at Nottingham Forest the previous day had significantly increased the pressure on Fulham, leaving the London club needing a positive result to avoid slipping further down the standings.
Fulham’s Josh King proved a constant threat in the United penalty area, recording seven touches and three attempts on goal. Only Marcus Rashford, with 10 touches, was more involved in the United box.
Remarkably, the hosts had registered nine attempts by half-time, while Manchester United had also failed to find the net despite producing 17 shots of their own.
Combative Fulham
The frequency with which Manchester United players were drawn into individual battles highlighted just how competitive Fulham had made the contest.
By the final whistle, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Youri Tielemans and Bryan Mbeumo had each been involved in at least seven duels, underlining the intensity of the encounter.
Harry Maguire produced the strongest individual return in the duels, winning six of his seven battles. The United defender was also the standout player in the air, coming out on top in two of his three aerial contests.
Manchester United were equally impressive when making tackles, winning all eight they attempted throughout the match. Fulham, by comparison, completed eight tackles but needed 13 attempts to reach the same total.

Arbeloa too passive on the touchline
Alvaro Arbeloa’s quiet approach from the dugout reflected his overall demeanour and may help explain some of Fulham’s struggles this season, particularly if he is unable to inspire a stronger response from his players.
Fulham also needed a fortunate break to take the lead. Senne Lammens failed to hold Calvin Bassey’s effort, with the loose ball subsequently ricocheting off Lisandro Martinez and into the net.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville criticised the team’s lack of effort in dealing with Fulham’s pressure, while the statistics highlighted the difference in work rate. Fulham’s players covered around 6km more collectively than their opponents, a notable gap over the course of the match.
United eventually began to respond, forcing Fulham defenders Timothy Castagne and David Affengruber to make seven clearances apiece as the visitors increased the pressure late on.
Cunha provides a fortunate equaliser
With just over a minute remaining before stoppage time, Matheus Cunha gave Manchester United a lifeline with a deflected equaliser. Although the goal was arguably deserved after the visitors’ late push for a way back into the contest, it still represented an underwhelming conclusion ahead of the international break.
Manchester United had been expected to challenge for all three points, but the match exposed areas that still require improvement. Several United players completed more than 90% of their passes, yet the overall performance suggested there is plenty of work to be done behind the scenes.
Only five Manchester United players finished the game with a passing accuracy below 90%, suggesting that retaining possession was not the main problem for the visitors. Instead, their lack of efficiency in front of goal appeared to be a more significant concern.
Luke Shaw managed just one shot on target from four attempts, while Marcus Rashford recorded two from six and Bryan Mbeumo one from five. Those figures offered a clearer indication of where United needed to be more effective.
In the end, both teams had to settle for a point. With the international break now approaching, both sides have around three weeks to work on their weaknesses before Manchester United welcome Tottenham and Fulham travel to Ipswich.
