George Russell anticipates one final engine penalty before end of 2026 season

George Russell Braced for Another engine penalty as Mercedes faces Singapore GP Challenge
George Russell expects to face another engine penalty before the end of the Formula One season, adding to his recent frustrations as he prepares to start the Singapore Grand Prix from the back of the grid. With his championship hopes fading, the Mercedes driver faces an increasingly difficult battle in the remaining races.
Mercedes has confirmed that Russell has exhausted his allocation of four power units for the season and will need to introduce a new engine for the Singapore sprint weekend. Team principal Toto Wolff also confirmed that the Briton would start Sunday’s Grand Prix from the rear of the field.
Russell’s latest setback follows a late retirement at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, where a power unit failure forced him out with just five laps remaining while he was running third. The result left him 84 points behind teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Russell explained that the engine had already completed six race weekends.
“The engine wasn’t stretched too long. It was the sixth race of the engine and obviously four engines a year, six races per engine when you split it up,” he said.
Russell revealed that the power unit had been installed ahead of the race weekend in Budapest, meaning it had completed six races without including qualifying and practice sessions from that event.
“We were waiting to take the engine penalty… but unfortunately, we’ve had to take it here,” he added.
With seven races still remaining, the Mercedes driver believes another grid penalty is almost inevitable before the season concludes.
“That means I’ll be taking another penalty at some point between the next race and the end of the season,” Russell explained.
He admitted that the sequence of setbacks had been difficult to manage, adding: “So it feels a little bit like one thing after another right now, but that’s just how the cookie crumbles.”
Mercedes to Run Different Car Setups in Singapore
Mercedes will adopt different car configurations for the Singapore weekend, with Antonelli continuing to evaluate the team’s updated package while Russell returns to the setup that helped him secure victory in Baku.
Russell said he had initiated discussions about reverting to the previous specification even before his retirement at the previous race. The engine penalty has now made the decision more straightforward.
“Actually I instigated the conversation prior to the race on Sunday,” he said.
He explained that the team had been considering the change before the power unit failure, with Russell already favouring a return to the earlier configuration.
“So this engine penalty this weekend is just giving a good opportunity to roll back. It’s a car that I won in Baku with,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli remains confident that Mercedes’ updated package offers genuine performance gains, despite the team struggling to demonstrate its full potential at Sepang. The Italian finished second behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at the circuit.
“I think there’s an actual improvement. It’s just we didn’t quite see it in Sepang and I think that’s why it was such an outlier,” Antonelli said.
The Mercedes youngster hopes the Singapore circuit will provide a better opportunity to understand the new components and extract more performance from the car.
“But hopefully this weekend we will be able to understand it more, put the car in a better place and be able to use its full potential,” he added.
Antonelli also praised the team’s efforts in developing the updated package, insisting that Mercedes should continue working to maximise its potential rather than abandon the project too early.
“We really want to understand this new package and try to extract the maximum out of it because the team has done a tremendous job,” he said. “They’ve put in so much work on this new package and it would be just a shame to write it off so early.”
