Valletta move top with victory over Birkirkara

Valletta took sole leadership of the VBET Malta Premier after goals from Andrea Zammit and Petar Sekulovic secured a 2–0 win over Birkirkara.
Thane Micallef’s side moved three points clear of Floriana, who have a game in hand and face Balzan on Sunday. Birkirkara remain on ten points after suffering their third defeat in five matches.
The Citizens threatened early when Bruno Gomes flicked Sava Radic’s cross just over the bar. From the resulting goal kick, Jake Azzopardi intercepted Fabrice Ondoa’s clearance but fired high from inside the penalty area.
Valletta appealed for a penalty in the 16th minute after a challenge by Kadu on Roko Prsa. Following a Football Video Support review, referee Alex Johnson upheld his decision not to award a spot-kick.
Birkirkara responded through Amarildo, who completed a good run with a shot narrowly wide. Adilson Maringa then kept Valletta level in the 40th minute, turning Rafa Santos’s effort behind after the midfielder was picked out by Shaft Brewer.
Valletta broke the deadlock three minutes later. Moise Mbende played the ball forward down the right and, following a defensive deflection, Zammit collected possession, advanced into the area and finished past Ondoa.
Birkirkara coach Paul Zammit made three changes at half-time, introducing Jake Vassallo, Fernandinho and Kemar Reid. The Stripes threatened shortly after the restart, but Maringa saved Amarildo’s close-range effort.
Valletta doubled their advantage in the 74th minute. Ondoa could only parry a powerful Gomes shot from the right, leaving substitute Sekulovic to convert the rebound from close range.
Louis Pahama went close for Birkirkara in the 81st minute, shooting just wide following a cross from the right. Sekulovic then narrowly missed the target at the other end after being supplied by Diogo Tavares.
Valletta almost added a third with a minute remaining when substitute Alex Tanque headed Brandon Paiber’s free-kick against the foot of the post.
Maringa preserved his clean sheet in stoppage time, saving Pablo Gabriel’s effort from outside the penalty area.
