AC Milan extend unbeaten Serie A run after Sassuolo stalemate

AC Milan maintained their unbeaten start to the Serie A season under Ruben Amorim, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Sassuolo, who extended their club-record unbeaten run against the Rossoneri to four matches (W1, D3).
Sassuolo had scored at least twice in each of their previous six home fixtures, but they struggled to find their attacking rhythm during the opening stages. Early efforts from Vasilije Adzic, Darryl Bakola and Armand Lauriente all failed to trouble the target, while Milan offered little more than a couple of blocked attempts.
The visitors created their first meaningful opportunity in the 33rd minute when Adrien Rabiot narrowly headed over from a wide free-kick. Sassuolo goalkeeper Arijanet Muric came off his line to deal with the delivery but failed to reach it.
Milan began to build pressure shortly before half-time. Goncalo Ramos forced Muric into a save with a shot from a tight angle, before the goalkeeper reacted sharply to tip another Ramos header over the crossbar.
Muric was soon called into action again, making a low save to deny Diego Moreira before stretching to keep out a header from Strahinja Pavlovic in stoppage time.
With four of Sassuolo’s previous five matches this season producing more goals after the interval, and Milan entering the round with the division’s strongest second-half record, an entertaining finish appeared likely.
However, the second half initially followed the same pattern as the first, with neither side registering an attempt until the 59th minute. Mike Maignan comfortably smothered a close-range effort from Adzic, while Ramos wasted an opportunity at the opposite end moments later.
Milan finally broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Luka Modric produced an excellent pass to release Adrien Rabiot, who fired past Muric at his near post from a difficult angle to give the visitors the lead.
The Rossoneri’s advantage lasted just five minutes, however. Armand Lauriente delivered a low corner that caused confusion inside Milan’s penalty area, and after the ball ricocheted through a crowded box, Cas Odenthal seized the opportunity to fire home his second goal of the season.
Sassuolo continued to threaten as the match approached its conclusion. Muric produced another important save to deny Alphadjo Cisse’s curling effort with six minutes remaining.
The hosts then appeared to have snatched a late winner when Kristian Thorstvedt found the net, but the goal was quickly ruled out for a foul.
The result means Alberto Aquilani’s Sassuolo have dropped points at home for the first time this season. Meanwhile, AC Milan have now gone unbeaten through their opening six Serie A matches for the first time since 2022, extending their positive start despite missing the opportunity to claim all three points.
