Thirty-seven-year-old Ivan Perisic, who currently plays for PSV, delivered an impressive full-match performance against reigning world champions Spain, who eventually secured victory after his controversial dismissal. Still driven by ambition, the Croatian veteran remains determined to help his side compete for another league title.

The generational battle against Lamine Yamal, a player young enough to be his son, did little to unsettle Perisic. Before the experienced winger was sent off following a contentious decision, Croatia had more than matched their Spanish opponents.

Playing in his hometown of Split appeared to inspire Perisic, who opened the scoring and later came close to doubling Croatia’s advantage, only to miss a golden opportunity.

His influence remained significant until around 15 minutes from the end, as he combined his trademark determination with tireless work along the left flank. In addition to finding the net, Perisic offered valuable defensive support while facing a 19-year-old widely regarded as one of football’s brightest talents and a leading Ballon d’Or contender.

Although the veteran eventually received a second yellow card, bringing his evening to an early end, the dismissal did little to overshadow his outstanding contribution. Perisic once again demonstrated that experience, determination and leadership can still make a major difference at the highest level.

A Relentless Worker and Proven Goalscorer

Perisic’s remarkable journey with the Croatian national team has firmly established his place among the country’s footballing greats, second only to Luka Modric in terms of legendary status. Since making his international debut in 2011, he has recorded 161 appearances, scoring 40 goals and providing 40 assists.

His ability to deliver in crucial moments has made him an indispensable figure for Croatia. With his impressive scoring record, Perisic has also become the nation’s second-highest goalscorer of all time, behind only Davor Suker.

At 37, Perisic shows little sign of slowing down. He continues to contribute at the highest level, reinforcing his reputation as one of the defining players of Croatia’s golden generation.

His influence was particularly evident at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he played a crucial role in Croatia’s historic run to the final and scored against France in the showpiece match. Four years later, he helped his country secure third place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before contributing to Croatia’s run to the UEFA Nations League final in 2023.

Perisic is the embodiment of hard work and selflessness, combining relentless effort with the technical ability that has defined his career. Throughout his journey, he has represented several major clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur and Hajduk Split, before joining PSV.

Euro 2028 Still a Possibility?

Perisic has continued to deliver important contributions on the international stage. Across his last three Nations League appearances, he recorded two assists and a goal, standing out as one of Croatia’s strongest performers despite the team collecting just three points from a possible nine.

His performances have also translated into goals at club level, with the Croatian winger finding the net twice in the Eredivisie. At PSV, his experience and maturity have become valuable assets, helping strengthen the squad while his playing time ranks fifth among the club’s outfield players.

Perisic developed into an exceptional box-to-box winger during his time at Inter under Antonio Conte, earning a reputation for his stamina, versatility and tactical discipline. Even as he approaches his 38th birthday, his physical condition and continued performances suggest he still has plenty to offer.

With Euro 2028 on the horizon, the question remains whether the Croatian veteran can maintain his impressive level and extend his international career long enough to feature at another major tournament.

With PSV currently sitting third in the Eredivisie standings, three points behind leaders AZ, Perisic will be expected to play a key role as the Boeren pursue a fourth consecutive league title. Achieving that feat would see PSV match Ajax’s record of four successive championships between 2010 and 2014, as well as their own historic run from 1985 to 1989.

Beyond club football, however, Perisic’s long-term ambition remains representing Croatia on the international stage. The experienced winger could still feature at Euro 2028, when he would be 39 years old.

Although the tournament remains some distance away, Perisic’s determination, professionalism and enduring quality could keep him in contention. If Croatia secure qualification and the veteran maintains his current level, another major international appearance could be within reach.
