Kerċem Ajax began their BOV Gozo Football League First Division campaign with a 2-1 victory over Sannat Lions at the Gozo Stadium on Monday.

Goals from Isaias Moura Vera Cruz De Souza and Patrick Tiengo Vasconcellos secured all three points for Kerċem, who moved into second place in the standings, three points behind leaders Għajnsielem with a match in hand.

Kerċem made a positive start and took the lead in the 12th minute through Isaias Moura Vera Cruz De Souza.

Sannat, who were looking to recover from their opening defeat against Għajnsielem, responded in the 31st minute when Yeangel Emilio Montero Manzano found the net to restore parity.

However, Kerċem regained the advantage in first-half stoppage time, with Patrick Tiengo Vasconcellos scoring in the 45th minute to give his side a 2-1 lead at the interval.

The second half produced no further goals, although Kerċem had an opportunity to extend their advantage deep into stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty.

Isaias Moura Vera Cruz De Souza stepped up in the 93rd minute but was denied by the Sannat goalkeeper, who saved his spot-kick.

The missed penalty did not affect the outcome as Kerċem held on to secure their first three points of the season.

The result leaves Sannat Lions without a point after two matches, while Kerċem join Xagħra United, Xewkija Tigers and SK Victoria Wanderers on three points.
