Malta 1-1 Gibraltar (HT 0-0)

Malta were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Gibraltar in their second UEFA Nations League Group D1 encounter at the National Stadium on Thursday evening, despite dominating large periods of the match and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

Joseph Mbong put Malta ahead early in the second half, but James Scanlon equalised eight minutes later to earn Gibraltar a share of the spoils. Zach Muscat struck the woodwork in the closing stages as Emilio De Leo’s side narrowly missed out on a second consecutive victory.

The result leaves Malta leading the group with four points, followed by Gibraltar on two and Andorra on one.

De Leo made two changes to the starting line-up that defeated Andorra away from home a week earlier. Juan Corbolan replaced Zach Muscat on the right flank, while Joseph Mbong was preferred to his brother Paul on the right wing.

Goalkeeper Henry Bonello, making his 77th international appearance, was the most experienced player in Malta’s starting eleven.

Malta began positively and threatened after just nine minutes when Irvin Cardona created space on the edge of the penalty area before firing narrowly over the crossbar.

Three minutes later, Mbong produced an impressive run down the left before delivering towards captain Matthew Guillaumier at the far post, only for Julian Valarino to intervene and concede a corner.

Malta continued to press, with Guillaumier releasing Cardona, who outpaced his marker before setting up Teddy Teuma. However, Dan Bent produced an important block to deny the midfielder.

The home side created another excellent opportunity midway through the first half when Ilyas Chouaref found Ryan Camenzuli, but the Ħamrun Spartans defender directed his effort straight at Gibraltar goalkeeper Jaylan Hankins.

Hankins was called into action again shortly afterwards, producing a save to deny Mbong’s rising effort.

Chouaref was particularly lively down the left flank, repeatedly troubling the Gibraltar defence. He saw one effort deflected behind for a corner before another dangerous run into the penalty area ended without him finding any of three unmarked teammates.

Gibraltar registered their first meaningful attempt in the 33rd minute when captain Graeme Torrilla tested Bonello from distance, forcing the Malta goalkeeper to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Malta responded with another opportunity for Camenzuli, but Hankins was once again equal to the task.

Two minutes before half-time, Mbong appeared destined to break the deadlock after being sent through on goal, only for Bent to produce a crucial last-ditch block.

Despite their dominance and numerous opportunities, Malta entered the interval with the score still goalless.

Malta maintained their attacking momentum after the restart and came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 52nd minute when Alex Satariano’s header from a corner was cleared off the goal line.

However, the breakthrough finally arrived just a minute later.

Chouaref delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where Joseph Mbong connected from close range to put Malta ahead and reward the home side’s attacking efforts.

De Leo’s men continued searching for a second goal, with Kurt Shaw heading narrowly wide in the 58th minute.

However, Gibraltar stunned the home crowd by equalising in the 61st minute.

Teuma lost possession to James Scanlon, who advanced towards the penalty area before unleashing an effort that took a deflection off Enrico Pepe and ended up in Bonello’s net.

The equaliser disrupted Malta’s rhythm, with Gibraltar growing in confidence and the contest becoming increasingly balanced.

De Leo introduced fresh legs during the closing stages, bringing on Brandon Paiber, Paul Mbong, Keyon Ewurum, Andrea Zammit and Zach Muscat as Malta attempted to regain the initiative.

Guillaumier created a promising opening for Zammit, but the substitute was unable to control the ball before Hankins intervened.

Malta came desperately close to snatching victory in stoppage time when Paul Mbong’s header from a corner found Muscat at the far post. However, the defender’s subsequent header struck the woodwork, denying Malta what would have been a dramatic winning goal.

The final whistle confirmed a frustrating draw for the home side, who had created enough opportunities to secure all three points but ultimately paid the price for failing to convert their chances.

Malta will now turn their attention to Sunday’s home encounter against Andorra at the National Stadium, where they will seek to consolidate their position at the top of Group D1.
