Edin Dzeko extends Schalke stay with new contract deal

Veteran Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko has extended his stay with Schalke, signing a new one-year contract after playing a key role in helping the club secure promotion back to the Bundesliga last season.
The 40-year-old forward, who captained Bosnia and Herzegovina at the recent World Cup, joined Schalke on a free transfer in January and quickly made an impact at the club.
Dzeko scored six goals in 11 Bundesliga 2 appearances, helping Schalke finish their promotion campaign successfully and return to Germany’s top flight after three seasons away.
Speaking after agreeing to the contract extension, Dzeko reflected on the importance of Schalke’s promotion achievement.
“Winning promotion to the Bundesliga ranks among the biggest highlights of my career. It was unbelievable,” Dzeko said.
“Football has made me happy and motivated me throughout my life. I’m still hungry, and I want to help our team in the Bundesliga as well.”
Dzeko could make his first Bundesliga appearance since leaving Wolfsburg for Manchester City in 2011 when Schalke begin their new league campaign away at Augsburg on August 30.
The experienced striker has enjoyed a remarkable career across Europe, representing several top clubs including Roma, Inter Milan, and Fenerbahce before arriving at Schalke.
With his leadership, experience, and proven goalscoring ability, Schalke will hope Dzeko can continue to make a difference as they return to Germany’s elite division.
