Floriana 1–1 Balzan

Floriana missed the opportunity to join neighbours Valletta at the top of the VBET Malta Premier standings after being held to a 1-1 draw by newly-promoted Balzan at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Paul Mbong’s second-half penalty rescued a point for the Greens after Oluwatobiloba Awosanya had given Balzan an early lead, but Floriana were unable to complete the comeback despite applying sustained pressure in the closing stages.

Balzan made the brighter start and threatened after just two minutes when Floriana goalkeeper Gabriele Cioletti produced a fine save to deny Lucas Macula.

Five minutes later, Awosanya went close with an effort that narrowly missed the target.

However, the Balzan forward made no mistake in the ninth minute when he raced clear of the Floriana defence before calmly slotting the ball beyond Cioletti to put his side ahead.

Floriana attempted to respond and Federico Varela sent a free-kick wide in the 20th minute. The Greens also appealed for a penalty following an alleged handball by a Balzan player, but the referee waved away their protests following a Football Video Support review.

The Greens continued searching for an equaliser and almost found one shortly before half-time when Balzan goalkeeper Dylan Ciappara produced an excellent save to tip Varela’s inswinging effort over the crossbar.

Balzan remained dangerous after the interval, with Kuach firing narrowly over before Cioletti was called into action again to deny Guehi.

Floriana squandered a promising opportunity in the 55th minute when Roman capitalised on a defensive mistake but failed to hit the target.

As the Greens increased the pressure, substitute Odey came close to restoring parity in the 66th minute, only for Ciappara to produce another outstanding save to keep out his header.

Floriana’s persistence was finally rewarded in the 76th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Mbong stepped up and confidently converted from the spot to bring the Greens level.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Floriana pushed forward in search of a winning goal and almost completed the turnaround two minutes later when Jbira sent his effort narrowly wide.

Despite their late pressure, the Greens were unable to find a breakthrough as Balzan held firm to secure a deserved point.

The result left Floriana frustrated in their pursuit of top spot, while Balzan could take encouragement from another determined performance against one of the league’s leading sides.

Scorers:

Floriana: Paul Mbong 76′ (pen).

Balzan: Oluwatobiloba Awosanya 9′.
