Wuhan Open shock: Qualifier Shi Han stuns Alexandra Eala in first-round upset
Shi Han produced a major upset at the Wuhan Open, defeating Alexandra Eala, who is ranked 198 places above her, in a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback victory in the first round on Monday.
The Chinese qualifier, ranked world No. 217, recovered from losing the opening set to overcome the tournament’s 13th seed, delivering a determined performance in front of her home crowd.
Despite falling behind, Shi remained committed to her strategy of targeting the edges of the court and using powerful serves to put Eala under pressure. Her persistence paid off as she took control of the match, winning the next two sets to complete an impressive victory.
The result marked a significant milestone for the 21-year-old, who celebrated her breakthrough win over a top-20-ranked opponent with visible disbelief.
“I tried to push myself in the serve… tried my best to win,” Shi said after the match.
Alexandra Eala Suffers Another Early Exit
For Alexandra Eala, the defeat represents another setback following a difficult spell of form over the past month
The Filipina has enjoyed a breakthrough season, attracting attention with seven victories over top-10-ranked opponents in 2026. However, her recent performances have been less consistent, with the loss to Shi adding to her recent struggles on court.
Eala also suffered a surprise defeat to Tatiana Prozorova, ranked 180th in the world, at the Singapore Open last month.
Despite her impressive results earlier in the season, the latest defeat highlights the challenges Eala faces as she looks to regain momentum and maintain her progress on the WTA Tour.
Meanwhile, Shi will take confidence from her victory in Wuhan, having demonstrated the resilience and quality needed to overcome a significantly higher-ranked opponent.
