Alcaraz reaches Vienna Open final as De Minaur pulls off shock win over Zverev

Carlos Alcaraz booked his place in the Vienna Open final with a straight-sets victory over Daniil Medvedev, winning 6-4, 7-6(2) in Saturday’s semi-final. The Spaniard will now face Alex de Minaur, who produced an impressive upset against soon-to-be world number one Alexander Zverev.
The victory extended Alcaraz’s unbeaten run at ATP 500 tournaments this season to 15 matches, further underlining his excellent form.
Despite the defeat, it was another successful week for Medvedev, whose fifth consecutive appearance in at least a tournament semi-final secured his qualification for next month’s season-ending ATP Finals.
“It’s a great feeling, beating someone like Daniil on an indoor court, after the (run) he was having,” Alcaraz said.
“I’m really happy to have the chance to play another final, and my first one here in Vienna.”
Alcaraz made the first breakthrough in the opening set by breaking Medvedev’s serve in the fourth game. However, the Russian responded immediately to level the score, keeping the contest closely balanced.
The decisive moment arrived at 5-4 when a double fault from Medvedev handed Alcaraz two set points. The Spaniard took his first opportunity to secure the opening set.
The second set was equally competitive, with Alcaraz appearing to take control after a missed volley from Medvedev gave him a 4-2 advantage. However, the former world number one fought back once again, breaking the Spaniard’s serve without dropping a point.
The match was eventually decided in a tie-break, where both players initially struggled to hold their service points. Alcaraz then produced five consecutive points to seal the victory and book his place in Sunday’s final.
Earlier, Alex de Minaur claimed one of the biggest victories of his career by defeating Alexander Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) to reach the Vienna final for the first time.
The Australian maintained his perfect indoor record this season, improving to 10-0, while keeping his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals alive. The victory also marked the 23rd tour-level final of his career.
De Minaur ended Zverev’s winning streak and denied the German a place in the final, just days after it was confirmed that he would rise to the top of the ATP world rankings on Monday.
The stage is now set for Sunday’s final, with Alcaraz and De Minaur preparing to battle for the Vienna Open title.
