Tallon Griekspoor misses out on Paris Masters after first-round qualifying defeat

Former Dutch No. 1 Tallon Griekspoor has missed out on a place in the main draw of the Paris Masters after suffering a first-round qualifying defeat against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, losing 3-6, 7-6 (5), 3-6.
Griekspoor was forced to enter the qualifying competition after narrowly missing out on the ranking cut-off. Ranked 50th in the world, the Dutchman entered the qualifiers as the second seed.
Facing French wild card Benjamin Bonzi, Griekspoor struggled to find his rhythm in the opening set. Bonzi secured an early break after converting his second opportunity to move 3-1 ahead. Although Griekspoor managed to respond by breaking back, he failed to maintain his momentum as the Frenchman continued to apply pressure and eventually claimed the first set.
The second set proved much more competitive, with Griekspoor improving his serve and refusing to offer Bonzi a single break-point opportunity. The Frenchman also remained solid on serve, sending the contest into a decisive tiebreak.
Griekspoor produced two consecutive mini-breaks to take control of the tiebreak and level the match. However, he needed several opportunities to close out the set, finally converting his fourth set point to force a deciding third set.
Both players remained close in the final set, but a crucial lapse in concentration proved costly for the Dutchman. Griekspoor lost his third service game without winning a point, allowing Bonzi to take control of the match.
The world No. 99 then showed composure under pressure, saving two break points to maintain his advantage before converting his first match point to secure an important victory.
The early exit represents a disappointing setback for Griekspoor, particularly after his recent success on the ATP Tour. The Dutchman had claimed the Brussels title just one week earlier and delivered a strong performance against Alexander Zverev in Vienna.
With the Paris Masters now out of reach, Griekspoor will have one more opportunity to collect valuable ranking points before the end of the season. His next scheduled appearance is at the Bybit Stockholm Open, which runs from November 8 to 14.
