Fiorentina and Atalanta extend winless streaks after dramatic draw

Fiorentina’s winless run at home in Serie A extended to eight matches (D5, L3) after La Viola and Atalanta played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
The visitors suffered an early setback when Thomas Kristensen was forced off through injury just four minutes into the match. The Dane became the second Atalanta defender in consecutive games to suffer an injury, following Raoul Bellanova, who picked up a thigh problem during Saturday’s 4-4 draw against Frosinone.
With their injury concerns mounting, Atalanta struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages. Fiorentina looked to take advantage, and Franco Mastantuono, on loan from Real Madrid, tested goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, who produced a good save to keep the visitors level.
Atalanta gradually grew into the contest and nearly took the lead through Eljif Elmas, whose effort was denied by a crucial goal-line block in the 19th minute. At the other end, Gianluca Gaetano and Mastantuono both failed to make the most of promising opportunities.
However, Atalanta eventually punished Fiorentina for their missed chances by opening the scoring four minutes before half-time. Charles De Ketelaere finished confidently from Nicola Zalewski’s cross, ending a nine-month wait for a domestic goal and giving La Dea their first away first-half goal of the season.
The goal also continued Fiorentina’s defensive struggles, with the hosts having now conceded 10 first-half goals in Serie A this season. They nearly fell further behind before the interval, but David De Gea produced an excellent save to deny Nikola Krstovic’s header.
The second half started later than expected after referee Federico La Penna suffered an injury, forcing fourth official Livio Marinelli to take charge. Once play resumed, Fiorentina immediately stepped up their attacking intensity.
Mastantuono came close with a superb free-kick that narrowly missed the target before Alieu Njie brought the hosts level with an excellent diving header. The Torino loanee scored his first goal for Fiorentina after connecting with a cross from Alex Jimenez, who continued his impressive form with five goal contributions in his previous seven appearances.
Fiorentina completed their comeback shortly after the hour mark when Joao Mario, on loan from Juventus, cut inside and fired towards goal. His effort took a significant deflection before finding the net, marking his first goal in a Fiorentina shirt.
Atalanta refused to give up and continued searching for an equaliser. Top scorer Krstovic missed a promising opportunity, but the visitors eventually found their breakthrough with 16 minutes remaining.
Nicola Zalewski squeezed the ball inside the near post to score his first goal of the season and restore parity at 2-2. Atalanta pushed for a late winner, but Marco Brescianini saw his close-range attempt blocked, leaving both sides to settle for a point.
The result means Fiorentina have now gone five matches without a victory in all competitions (D2, L3), while Atalanta’s winless streak has reached four games (D2, L2).
Fiorentina move up one position to 18th in the Serie A standings but remain inside the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Atalanta stay 12th, although the draw brings an end to their run of four consecutive away defeats.
