Holger Rune saves match point to defeat Hurkacz and reach Basel quarter-finals

Holger Rune produced a determined comeback to defeat Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, saving a match point along the way to secure his place in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Wednesday

The 23-year-old Dane continued his return to form with a hard-fought victory over the world No. 28, showing resilience in a tense deciding-set tiebreak after two hours of intense competition.

The result marked Rune’s second ATP Tour victory since returning from a long-term injury, offering further encouragement as he looks to regain the level that previously established him among the world’s top 10 players.

Rune Overcomes Hurkacz’s Powerful Serve

Rune entered the contest after another demanding three-set victory in the opening round against Frenchman Quentin Halys, who is known for his powerful serve.

His second-round meeting with Hurkacz presented a similar challenge, with the Polish player using his serve to put the Dane under constant pressure.

Rune struggled to make an impact early in the match, losing his serve once in the opening set. Despite earning three break points in Hurkacz’s following service game, he was unable to convert any of them as the Pole claimed the first set 6-3.

However, the Danish star responded strongly in the second set, finding greater consistency and securing a crucial service break. That proved enough to level the contest at one set apiece, setting up a tense decider.

Dramatic Third Set Sees Rune Save Match Point

The deciding set developed into a closely fought battle, with neither player managing to break the other’s serve. With both players holding firm, the match was eventually decided by a third-set tiebreak.

Hurkacz had relied heavily on his powerful serve throughout the contest, but his delivery became less consistent during the decisive moments. The tiebreak featured several momentum swings as both players traded mini-breaks.

Rune benefited from a fortunate net-cord shot but followed it with a double fault, keeping the outcome uncertain.

The Dane then had an opportunity to close out the match while leading 6-5, but sent his shot beyond the baseline and allowed Hurkacz to remain in contention.

The Polish player subsequently earned a match point of his own, putting Rune on the brink of defeat. However, the Dane responded with composed baseline play to save the opportunity and keep his tournament hopes alive.

When Rune earned his second match point, he made no mistake, sealing the victory and celebrating emphatically inside St. Jakobshalle in Basel.

The win highlighted Rune’s determination under pressure and his ability to produce important shots when the match was on the line.

Rune Awaits Quarter-Final Opponent in Basel

Rune will return to action on Friday for his Basel quarter-final, where he is scheduled to face either Spanish prospect Rafael Jodar or Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot, depending on the outcome of their match.

Both potential opponents present different challenges, meaning Rune will need to maintain his level if he hopes to continue his run at the Swiss tournament.

For the Danish star, the victory over Hurkacz represents another encouraging step in his comeback. Having survived a match point and navigated a demanding three-set contest, Rune will head into the next round with renewed confidence as he looks to make a deeper run in Basel.
