Venus Williams suffered her 16th consecutive singles defeat after falling to Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger in straight sets at the Guangzhou Open on Tuesday.

The 46-year-old American tennis legend, who is 28 years older than her opponent, was beaten 6-2, 6-2 by Tagger in southern China.

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and former world number one, has not won a singles match on the WTA Tour since July last year.

Currently ranked 599th in the world, Williams last competed in singles at the US Open in August and September, where she suffered a straight-sets first-round defeat to Sofia Kenin.

However, Williams enjoyed success in the doubles competition in Guangzhou on Monday, partnering Indonesia’s Janice Tjen to secure a victory. The pair are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the 53rd-ranked Tagger will face Poland’s Magda Linette in the next round as she looks to continue her run at the tournament.
