The Malta Football Association (Malta FA) has welcomed the announcement in the Budget 2027 speech of the introduction of 10 days of paid sports leave for elite athletes representing Malta at European and World Championships, as well as members of the technical and medical teams accompanying them.

The measure was originally proposed by the Malta FA, which has long advocated for a dedicated sports leave entitlement to allow national team players and support staff to fulfil their international commitments without having to use their personal leave.

The Association believes that this initiative represents a positive step towards supporting athletes and staff who combine elite-level sport with full-time employment. It is also expected to help them continue their development and compete at the highest level while balancing their professional responsibilities.

The Malta FA has expressed its readiness to work with the relevant authorities to ensure the successful implementation of the measure.

In recent years, the Association has worked closely with the Government and its authorities on various initiatives aimed at encouraging and supporting sportspeople across the country.

The Malta FA has welcomed the continuation of this collaboration, expressing confidence that the strong financial allocation for the sports sector announced in Budget 2027 will provide further opportunities to develop projects and initiatives that raise the standard of football in Malta.

The introduction of paid sports leave is seen as an important step in recognising the commitment required to represent the country internationally and in creating better conditions for athletes and the professionals who support them.
