Michael Carrick believes he will still be Manchester United manager for Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Roma, despite a 2-0 loss to Chelsea that extended the club’s winless streak to nine games.

Carrick was handed another opportunity by the United hierarchy following last weekend’s disappointing 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth, with many expecting the former England midfielder to be dismissed.

Manchester United showed signs of improvement during the first half at Stamford Bridge but were unable to make their chances count, wasting several opportunities to take the lead.

Morgan Rogers then cut through the heart of United’s defence early in the second half to put Chelsea ahead.

Lisandro Martinez was subsequently sent off after receiving two quick yellow cards and giving away a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted to put the result beyond doubt and end Manchester United’s hopes of a comeback.

When asked by TNT Sports whether he expected to remain in charge for the Champions League clash against Roma, Carrick replied: “Yes.”

“We have to move forward. We need to take the positives from today, recognise what worked well and carry some belief and confidence into the next game, particularly from our performance in the first half,” he added.

United’s longest winless streak in 38 years has left them just one point clear of the Premier League relegation zone, with the possibility of slipping into the bottom three before the weekend is over.

“Considering how well we played in the first half, the two periods of the game could hardly have been more different in certain respects,” Carrick said.

“I think the way they went about it and played, the quality of football and the way we played in the first half, definitely gives encouragement. We’ve got to take that.”

Two defeats in their first three Champions League games have left United 20th in the 36-team table and at risk of missing out on the knockout stages.
