Ajax end winless streak with victory over AZ to close gap on Feyenoord to one point

The breakthrough came in the ninth minute when in-form striker Tolu Arokodare rose above Mees de Wit to head home an excellent cross from Ouazane, giving Ajax an early lead.
Chances were limited after the opening goal, with Ajax struggling to create opportunities and AZ lacking precision in the final third. The hosts also suffered an injury setback in the 38th minute when Julian Brandt, who had contributed six goals and two assists in the league, was forced off following a non-contact injury.
The second half saw Marc-André ter Stegen become the busiest player on the pitch, with the German goalkeeper producing several important saves to deny AZ an equaliser.
Ajax struggled to threaten after the break and failed to register a shot on target until the 88th minute. Substitute Oscar Gloukh saw his effort saved by Jari De Busser before missing another opportunity in stoppage time, firing wide as Ajax looked to extend their advantage.
AZ continued pushing for a late equaliser, and Mexx Meerdink had one final opportunity in the closing seconds. However, his backheel attempt lacked power and was comfortably collected by a relieved Ter Stegen.
Despite a disappointing second-half display, Ajax managed to protect their narrow advantage and secure all three points. The victory ended their lengthy winless streak against AZ and brought them to within one point of league leaders Feyenoord.
For AZ Alkmaar, the defeat extended their disappointing league run, with their last league victory dating back to September 20.
Both teams will now turn their attention to European competition. Ajax are set to travel to face Midtjylland in the UEFA Conference League, while AZ will welcome Juventus to Alkmaar on Thursday.
