Zverev overcomes Bublik in gruelling battle to reach Shanghai quarter-finals

Zverev survives Bublik thriller to book Shanghai Masters quarter-final spot
Alexander Zverev battled through a tense three-set encounter against Alexander Bublik, winning 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (1) on Tuesday to reach the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals. The German top seed secured his first victory since being assured of finishing the year as world number one.
The 29-year-old will next face Alex de Minaur for a place in the semi-finals.
“Really difficult match,” Zverev said after the contest.
“I had some physical issues, so, you know, I was maybe slower,” he told the crowd, before revealing that his ankle had caused further problems.
“My ankle was acting up unfortunately again,” he explained during his on-court interview, without providing further details.
“I’m starting to feel my body more, but happy to be through.”
The world number two had already secured the year-end number one ranking after third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock defeat to Zizou Bergs in Shanghai on Monday.
The opening set was closely contested, with both players relying on powerful serving and trading aces to hold their respective games. However, Zverev faced a major test when he had to save a set point to force a tiebreak.
Bublik then squandered three consecutive set points, allowing the German to seize control. Zverev capitalised on the opportunity, finishing the tiebreak with an aggressive forehand at the net to take the opener.
The momentum shifted in the second set when Bublik broke Zverev’s serve in the fifth game. Despite producing several important backhands, the German struggled to regain his rhythm and eventually surrendered the set 6-4, forcing a deciding third.
Once again, the contest went to a tiebreak. This time, however, Zverev dominated proceedings, racing into a 6-1 lead before sealing the victory with an ace.
The hard-fought win sent Zverev into the Shanghai quarter-finals, although his ongoing ankle concerns could remain a factor in the next round.
Mensik suffers shock defeat
Elsewhere, Arthur Gea, ranked 56th in the world, produced an impressive performance to defeat Jakub Mensik 7-6 (4), 6-4 in their fourth-round clash.
The 15th-ranked Mensik attempted to create a late opportunity in the second set, but Gea responded with a superb cross-court backhand before converting his first match point to complete the upset.
“I’m enjoying how I’m playing. I feel I’m improving all the time,” Gea said after securing his place in the quarter-finals.
The Frenchman is now the lowest-ranked player remaining in the tournament and will be hoping to continue his remarkable run.
Asked whether he could repeat the unexpected title-winning success of Valentin Vacherot, who lifted the trophy last year as the world number 204, Gea remained hopeful.
“We’ll see what happens,” he said.
“I don’t think it’s a miracle when you work hard every day, but I hope to do the same.”
The 21-year-old has already enjoyed a breakthrough week in Shanghai, having defeated US Open finalist Ben Shelton, the third seed, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) in the third round.
That victory marked the biggest win of Gea’s career, and his latest triumph over Mensik has further strengthened his growing reputation on the ATP Tour.
