How Kimi Antonelli could clinch his first Formula 1 World Championship in Austin

How Kimi Antonelli could clinch his first Formula 1 World Championship in Austin
At just 20 years old, Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli could be on the verge of making Formula 1 history. The Italian youngster has a chance to secure his maiden Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, potentially becoming the youngest world champion the sport has ever seen.
Flashscore looks at what Antonelli needs to achieve to seal the title and make history in Texas.
Kimi Antonelli’s Remarkable Rise to the Top
Antonelli’s journey to the top of Formula 1 has been nothing short of extraordinary.
The Italian made his F1 debut in 2025, taking over from Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, the team with which the British driver won six Drivers’ Championships and helped secure eight Constructors’ Championships.
Replacing a driver of Hamilton’s stature was always going to be a significant challenge, but Antonelli quickly demonstrated his potential. He became the third-youngest driver to compete in Formula 1 and later claimed a podium finish in Canada, becoming the third-youngest podium finisher in the sport’s history. He added two more podiums during an impressive debut campaign.
However, it was in 2026 that Antonelli truly emerged as a championship contender.
Mercedes produced a highly competitive car in the W17, allowing the young Italian to make an immediate impact. After finishing second in Melbourne, Antonelli embarked on a remarkable run of five consecutive victories, opening up a substantial advantage over his teammate and closest rival, George Russell.
Following the Singapore Grand Prix, Antonelli had secured 14 podium finishes from 17 races, putting himself in a commanding position in the title fight.
2026 Formula 1 World Championship Standings
According to the standings following the Singapore Grand Prix, the top six drivers are:
- Kimi Antonelli – 340 points
- George Russell – 238 points
- Lewis Hamilton – 229 points
- Max Verstappen – 221 points
- Charles Leclerc – 215 points
- Lando Norris – 201 points
With only six Grands Prix remaining in the 2026 season, Antonelli heads to Austin knowing that the United States Grand Prix could provide his first opportunity to secure the world title.
But what exactly needs to happen for the Mercedes driver to become Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion?
How Kimi Antonelli Can Win the Formula 1 World Championship in Austin
After finishing third at the Singapore Grand Prix, while Russell could manage only fifth place, Antonelli extended his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 102 points.
Following the race in Austin, a maximum of 125 points will remain available across the final five Grands Prix.
To clinch the championship in Texas, Antonelli must increase his advantage by at least 23 points over his nearest rival. There is one specific combination of results that would allow him to achieve that.
For Antonelli to become world champion in Austin, the following must happen:
- Kimi Antonelli wins the United States Grand Prix.
- George Russell finishes ninth or lower.
- Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower.
If all three conditions are met, Antonelli would secure the championship with five races still remaining.
A victory combined with those results would also eliminate Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris from title contention.
At 20 years and 61 days old, Antonelli would become the youngest Formula 1 World Drivers’ Champion in history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel, who won his first title at 23 years old in 2010.
The achievement would also make Antonelli only the third Italian driver to win the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, following the legendary Alberto Ascari, who claimed the title in 1952 and 1953.
What Happens if Two Drivers Finish Level on Points?
Even if Antonelli wins in Austin, the championship battle could theoretically remain alive if the points situation allows George Russell or Lewis Hamilton to catch him over the remaining races.
Should two or more drivers finish the season level on points, Formula 1 uses a countback system to determine the champion. The title goes to the driver with the greater number of Grand Prix victories. If the number of wins is equal, second-place finishes and subsequent results are used to separate them.
An Austin victory would give Antonelli nine Grand Prix wins for the 2026 season.
With five races remaining after the United States Grand Prix, Russell, who has three victories, and Hamilton, who has one, would be unable to match Antonelli’s total even if either driver equalled his final championship points tally.
That would give the Italian a decisive advantage in the countback, strengthening his position in any potential tie.
When Is the 2026 United States Grand Prix?
The 2026 United States Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 25, at 22:00 CEST at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas.
With the championship potentially within reach, all eyes will be on Antonelli as he looks to turn an outstanding season into a historic title triumph.
If the necessary results fall into place, the young Mercedes driver could make history in Austin and establish himself as Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion.
