Latvia favourites to overcome struggling Malta U21

Latvia will be looking to make the most of home advantage when they face Malta U21 in their latest UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying fixture at the Daugava Stadium.
Latvia head into the match in mixed form, having recorded one win, one draw and three defeats in their last five matches across all competitions. Their most recent outing ended in a 4-2 defeat against Greece, highlighting some defensive weaknesses.
The Latvians have scored six goals and conceded 20 during the current qualifying campaign, while their home record stands at one draw and three defeats. Coach Dainis Skrebs will therefore be hoping his side can produce a stronger performance on home soil and claim an important three points.
Malta, meanwhile, have endured a difficult qualifying campaign and remain at the bottom of the standings without a point after nine matches. The Maltese suffered a 4-1 defeat against Germany in their previous match and have managed just two goals while conceding 36.
Under coach Silvio Vella, Malta have lost all nine of their qualifying matches, with their away record also standing at four defeats. They will be hoping to produce a much-improved display and finally end their disappointing run.
The head-to-head record also favours Latvia, who have won the last three meetings between the two sides. The most recent encounter ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for Latvia, continuing their recent dominance in this fixture.
Latvia will therefore start as favourites, with home advantage and their superior record against Malta giving them confidence ahead of the match. Malta, however, will be determined to show a reaction and end their difficult campaign on a more positive note.
