Malta opened their UEFA European Women’s Under-19 Championship qualifying campaign with a 5–0 defeat to Czechia at the Centenary Stadium, Ta’ Qali, on Tuesday.

Ema Jůřeníková scored twice as the visitors dominated the Group B6 encounter, building a three-goal lead before half-time and adding two more after the interval.

Malta goalkeeper Maya Muscat made several saves during a difficult afternoon, with Czechia applying pressure from the opening stages.

Muscat was first called into action in the eighth minute, stopping Šárka Kynclová’s effort from outside the penalty area. Natálie Pešková then attempted to lob the Malta goalkeeper nine minutes later, but her effort went wide.

Czechia threatened again in the 23rd minute when Ellen Eiseltová flicked a cross from the left towards goal, only for Muscat to make another save.

The breakthrough came two minutes later. Another move down the left produced a cross for Pešková, who converted to put the visitors ahead.

Czechia had a goal disallowed in the 31st minute following a foul on Muscat, but doubled their advantage three minutes later. Jůřeníková advanced down the left, entered the penalty area and placed her shot into the corner.

Eiseltová added a third in the 42nd minute, finishing from a dangerous position in front of goal to leave Malta facing a substantial deficit at the break.

The visitors maintained their pressure after the restart. Muscat saved a central effort from Jolana Sádlová in the 53rd minute, but was beaten three minutes later when Klára Daníčková converted from close range.

Jůřeníková completed the scoring in the 65th minute, breaking through and calmly placing her effort into the corner for her second goal of the match.

Malta now face Romania on 9 October at 14:30 before meeting Kazakhstan on 12 October at 12:30. Both matches will be played at the Centenary Stadium.
