Sliema Wanderers held by Gżira United in derby stalemate

Sliema Wanderers 1–1 Gżira United
Sliema Wanderers missed an opportunity to close the gap on the Premier League pacesetters after being held to a 1-1 draw by neighbouring rivals Gżira United in a closely contested derby.
Both goals arrived inside the opening ten minutes, with Anthony Limbombe giving the Wanderers an early advantage before Albion Pillala restored parity for Gżira.
Sliema made a flying start and took the lead after just two minutes when Teddy Teuma picked out Limbombe, who unleashed a powerful drive beyond Gżira goalkeeper Colombo.
However, the Maroons responded positively and were back on level terms in the tenth minute following a swift counter-attack. Pillala raced through the Sliema defence before calmly slotting the ball past the advancing Henry Bonello.
The Wanderers almost regained the lead four minutes later when Limbombe delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, but Musa failed to make contact with the goal at his mercy.
The remainder of the first half developed into a tightly contested affair, with neither side managing to create significant opportunities as both defences held firm.
Sliema emerged with greater attacking intent after the interval and began to exert sustained pressure on their opponents.
In the 53rd minute, Limbombe tested Colombo with another powerful effort, but the Gżira goalkeeper reacted well to push the ball away.
Two minutes later, Alexander Satariano created space down the left flank and delivered a dangerous cross-shot which beat Colombo but found no teammate to apply the finishing touch.
The Wanderers continued to dominate possession and territory as they searched for a second goal.
Colombo produced another important intervention when Musa broke through on goal, with the San Marino international standing firm to deny the Sliema forward.
Despite laying siege to the Gżira penalty area during the closing stages, Sliema were unable to convert their superiority into a winning goal.
Gżira defended resolutely to preserve the draw and secure a valuable point, while Sliema were left frustrated after failing to capitalise on their second-half dominance.
The result represented another setback for the Wanderers in their efforts to keep pace with the leading sides in the Premier League standings.
