The first edition of the Aquaman VisitMalta Open Water Malta brought together swimmers from 16 countries in Marsalforn, Gozo, for two days of open-water competition.

Held on August 29 and 30, the event was organised by Otters A.S.C. in partnership with the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA Malta), with races taking place in the waters off the Otters Pitch in Marsalforn Bay.

Seven different race formats were included in the programme, catering for competitors ranging from youngsters and newcomers to experienced open-water swimmers.

Distances ranged from a 500-metre event for younger and first-time competitors to the demanding 5km open-sea race. The programme also included a 1km fin race and a 3x500m team relay.

Organisers said the inaugural event was aimed not only at providing competitive opportunities for swimmers but also at establishing Gozo as a destination on the international open-water swimming calendar.

Marsalforn provided favourable conditions for the competition, with its sheltered bay, clear waters and late-summer sea temperatures offering an attractive setting for visiting athletes.

The event also formed part of efforts to develop sports tourism in Gozo, attracting competitors and accompanying family members while promoting swimming and active lifestyles across the Maltese Islands.

Safety was given particular importance throughout the weekend, with competitors monitored by an on-water safety team. Medical assistance and aid stations were also available, while cut-off times were established for the various distances.

Timing chips were used to provide competitors with official results.

The organisers said feedback from participants was positive, particularly among swimmers experiencing open-water competition for the first time.

“It was an amazing experience. It was my first open-water competition but definitely not my last. I can’t wait until next year,” one participant said.

The event was supported by VisitMalta and the Grand Hotel as main sponsors, together with Otters A.S.C. and ASA Malta and a number of other partners.

“It was a great experience, and we can’t wait for the journey ahead,” the organisers said. “Stay tuned for 2027, we’re already planning something new.”

The inaugural event also had an international competitive dimension, with 68 swimmers qualifying for the Aquaman World Championship scheduled to be held in Somabay, Egypt, in October.

Following the response to this year’s event, organisers have already started working on an expanded second edition in 2027, with further details expected to be announced at a later stage.

Otters A.S.C., traditionally associated with water polo in Gozo, has in recent years expanded its activities through a swimming school covering several aquatic disciplines, including artistic swimming.

The Marsalforn-based club has also become increasingly involved in organising open-water swimming and multi-sport events in Gozo, with the inaugural Aquaman VisitMalta forming part of those efforts to broaden participation in aquatic sport.
