Nicolas Otamendi’s return to Argentina has been officially confirmed, with River Plate unveiling the experienced defender as their newest signing on Friday, just weeks after he announced his departure from Benfica.

In a statement released on the club’s official website, River Plate confirmed that the centre-back completed the formalities of his move on May 29. The agreement will see Otamendi represent the club from July 1, 2026, through to December 31, 2027. The contract signing took place at the club’s headquarters in the presence of president Stefano Di Carlo.

The 2022 World Cup-winning defender arrives as a free agent after deciding against extending his stay with Benfica, bringing an end to a successful six-year spell in Portugal.

Otamendi leaves the Lisbon giants having made 281 appearances in all competitions, contributing 18 goals and eight assists. During his time at Benfica, he helped the club secure a Primeira Liga title, a League Cup, and two Super Cup trophies.

His final outing for Benfica came in a 3-1 victory over Estoril, providing a fitting conclusion to a highly successful chapter of his career before embarking on a new challenge with River Plate.

It is also worth noting that Otamendi previously enjoyed a highly successful spell in Portugal with Porto, Benfica’s fierce rivals. During his time at the club, the veteran defender lifted seven trophies, including three Primeira Liga titles, establishing himself as one of the league’s standout centre-backs.

With his club future now resolved, Otamendi can fully concentrate on international duty with Argentina. The experienced defender is expected to remain a vital figure in the Albiceleste backline as the reigning world champions prepare for the final phase of their 2026 World Cup campaign.
