Barcelona’s reported interest in Julian Alvarez has triggered a strong response from Atletico Madrid, escalating tensions between the two clubs. What initially began with a light-hearted reaction from the Madrid side has since developed into a far more serious and confrontational exchange, with Atletico accusing Barcelona of disrespect and misinformation.

The situation surrounding Barcelona, Alvarez, and Atletico Madrid has quickly intensified, creating significant tension between the Metropolitano and Camp Nou. Early claims suggested a €100 million bid for the Argentine striker, which Atletico firmly denied, initially responding in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

The club took to social media referencing the famous “Here We Go” phrase used by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, posting a series of humorous mock offers. These included jokingly offering concert tickets, sunflower seeds, and a subscription to the ABC newspaper in exchange for Lamine Yamal — a clear satirical jab at Barcelona and broader transfer rumours.

Atletico continued the playful tone by fabricating further exaggerated scenarios, including a supposed proposal involving Pedri and a fictional loan deal for Raphinha in exchange for less prominent players. The club even joked about an alleged offer involving Barcelona sporting director Deco joining their scouting department.

However, what began as humour later shifted into frustration, with Atletico Madrid ultimately launching a more forceful response, accusing Barcelona of spreading false narratives and showing a lack of respect.

However, Atletico Madrid’s humorous tone quickly disappeared just minutes later as the club shifted to a far more serious and confrontational stance. In a strongly worded response, they accused Barcelona of destabilising behaviour, leaking information, and showing a lack of respect, while also referencing the ongoing Negreira case, in which Barcelona are under investigation over alleged payments made over several years to a former vice-president of Spain’s refereeing committee during his tenure.

In a social media statement, Atletico wrote: “No, Atletico de Madrid would never do something like that. However, over the past few months, we have been subjected to a relentless smear campaign against one of our players.”

The message continued: “Calculated leaks, fake news, constant disrespect, the ‘culé’ version of the propaganda machine inventing small stories, phone calls before head-to-head clashes… But of course, it would never occur to us either to have the vice-president of the referees on the payroll or to rely on political favours to register players. RESPECT and VALUES.”
