The Malta Football Association (Malta FA) has successfully concluded the 2026 edition of its Stewards Training Course. This initiative marks a significant milestone in upgrading safety, security, and operational standards at football matches across the Maltese islands.

The course aligns local matches with national and international safety regulations, following legislation introduced last year that mandates sports venues to deploy trained, licensed stewards.

New Legal Framework and Police Cooperation

Under the updated law, certified stewards will manage crowd control and spectator safety. This structural shift allows the The Police Force to focus on core duties while stewards handle day-to-day matchday operations.

Investing in steward education reflects the Malta FA’s strategy to create a professional, welcoming, and safe environment for supporters, players, and officials alike.

Course Structure and Curriculum

Participants completed a comprehensive 30-hour accredited programme split into 10 distinct study units. The curriculum blended theoretical classroom learning with practical on-site application.

The core training topics included:

• Crowd Management: Directing flows and monitoring spectator safety.
• Conflict Management: De-escalating tensions and managing disputes.
• Emergency Procedures: Executing evacuation plans and crisis response.
• Customer Care: Assisting fans and improving the matchday experience.
• Legal Responsibilities: Understanding statutory duties under the new law.

Graduates of the program are now officially eligible to receive their recognized steward licence, which is a mandatory legal requirement to work at local sporting events.
