Malta suffered a cruel stoppage-time defeat on Monday evening as Slovakia snatched a 2-1 victory with virtually the final kick of an entertaining international friendly at the MOL Arena in Dunajská Streda.

Emilio De Leo’s side looked set to earn a highly commendable draw against opponents ranked significantly higher in the FIFA rankings after Joseph Mbong cancelled out Slovakia’s early opener. However, Roland Galčík struck deep into added time to hand the hosts victory and deny Malta a deserved result.

Despite spending long periods under pressure, Malta produced a disciplined and determined display, with goalkeeper Henry Bonello once again proving one of the team’s standout performers thanks to a string of important saves.

De Leo used the occasion to test several players, handing Kean Scicluna his first international start in only his second appearance for the national team. Young forward Keyon Ewurum also earned his first start, while Kevin Cannavò and Aleandro Garzia made their senior international debuts from the bench during the second half.

Slovakia made a bright start and Bonello was called into action after only six minutes, reacting sharply to deny Tomáš Suslov from close range.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock three minutes later when captain Ondrej Duda helped create the opening for Lukáš Haraslín, who finished clinically to put Slovakia ahead.

Malta responded positively and almost levelled on 14 minutes when Ewurum cut inside before curling narrowly wide of the target.

The Slovaks continued to threaten and came close to extending their advantage midway through the first half. László Bénes saw an effort blocked before David Strelec wasted a golden opportunity, directing his shot straight at Bonello from inside the area.

Malta’s persistence was rewarded in the 37th minute. Ilyas Chouaref released Zach Muscat down the right flank and the experienced defender delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Mbong controlled well before firing home from close range to bring Malta level.

The equaliser boosted Malta’s confidence and the visitors nearly went ahead before the break. Chouaref was again influential as he picked out Ewurum, whose effort was diverted behind for a corner.

At the opposite end, Bonello continued to frustrate Slovakia, producing excellent saves to deny Adam Obert and later Robert Boženík following a corner.

The second half was a more balanced affair, with Malta defending resolutely and limiting Slovakia’s clear-cut opportunities.

Suslov tested Bonello early after the restart, while substitute Enrico Pepe tried his luck from distance for Malta shortly after the hour mark.

Malta’s best opportunity of the second half arrived in the 77th minute when a swift counterattack carved open the Slovak defence. Debutant Cannavò teed up Andrea Zammit, whose curling effort drifted agonisingly wide.

As the match entered its closing stages, Slovakia increased the pressure. Boženík squandered two good chances, while Peter Kováčik struck the post with a curling effort during stoppage time.

Just when it appeared Malta had done enough to secure a valuable draw, the decisive moment arrived in the seventh minute of added time. Adrian Kaprálik found Roland Galčík inside the area and the substitute fired a low diagonal shot beyond Bonello to seal a dramatic victory for the hosts.

Despite the disappointment, Malta can take several positives from a spirited performance against strong opposition as preparations continue for future competitive fixtures.

The national team will now travel to Hungary for their next international friendly, where they will face Azerbaijan in Szombathely on Friday evening.
