Cabo Verde registered yet another historic result against a former FIFA World Cup™ winner, recovering from a halftime deficit to hold Uruguay to a shock 2-2 draw at Miami Stadium. Following their scoreless draw with Spain in their opening fixture, Bubista’s side proved once again that they can go toe-to-toe with footballing royalty in Group H.

The Blue Sharks took a stunning lead in the 21st minute after Telmo Arcanjo earned a free-kick. Stepping up from 34 yards out, Kevin Pina unleashed a powerful strike that found a gap in the Uruguayan wall and nestled into the bottom corner of the net.

Uruguay responded aggressively and managed to turn the contest completely on its head with a quick-fire double just before the interval. In the 44th minute, Rodrigo Bentancur’s header struck the post, and Maxi Araújo was quickest to react, stooping low to nod the ball home for the equalizer. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Agustín Canobbio put La Celeste ahead by cushioning Araújo’s knock-down past Cabo Verdean goalkeeper Vozinha.

Uruguay’s momentum was halted in the 61st minute when a defensive mix-up gifted Cabo Verde an equalizer. Hélio Varela capitalized on the error, calmly slotting the ball home to make it 2-2 and send the travelling fans into raptures.

It was all Uruguay for the remainder of the match as they desperately chased a winning goal. However, even with the legendary Luis Suárez cheering them on from the stands, the South American giants were unable to break down a resolute Cabo Verde defense, which was marshaled masterfully by Pico Lopes and Sidny Lopes Cabral.

The draw leaves Group H finely poised, with Spain sitting at the top on four points, followed by Uruguay and Cabo Verde both locked on two points apiece ahead of the final round of group fixtures.
