Spain bounced back from their opening-match frustrations in emphatic style, dismantling Saudi Arabia 4-0 at Atlanta Stadium to put their FIFA World Cup 2026™ campaign firmly on track.

Following a surprising scoreless draw against tournament debutants Cabo Verde in their Group H opener, La Roja wasted no time asserting themselves in Atlanta. Luis de la Fuente’s side pinned the Green Falcons deep into their own territory right from the first whistle and effectively killed off the contest before the opening half’s hydration break.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal made an immediate impact upon his return to the starting lineup, sliding home the opening goal in the 10th minute after a precise cross from Mikel Oyarzabal.

Oyarzabal then took center stage himself, capitalizing on the immense pressure Spain exerted on the Saudi defense. The forward struck twice in the space of three minutes, converting two close-range finishes in the 21st and 24th minutes to put Spain 3-0 up. Oyarzabal nearly secured a first-half hat-trick on two separate occasions, first clipping the top of the crossbar following a poor clearance and later driving a low shot narrowly wide across the face of goal.

De la Fuente opted to withdraw both Yamal and Oyarzabal at halftime, but the tactical changes did little to slow Spain’s momentum. Early in the second half, Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais made a strong save to deny a volley from Marc Cucurella, but the rebound unfortunately deflected off defender Hassan Altambakti and into his own net to make it 4-0 in the 49th minute.

The comprehensive victory moves Spain to the top of Group H with four points. They now head into their final group-stage fixture against Uruguay knowing that a single point will be enough to guarantee them a spot in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia must regroup before their final group match against Cabo Verde.
