According to a report from The Athletic, the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers are engaged in serious trade discussions involving Kawhi Leonard and Klay Thompson.

Leonard, 34, is entering the final year of his current contract and is set to earn $50.3 million next season before potentially becoming an unrestricted free agent, unless a new deal is reached.

The Los Angeles native has spent the last seven seasons with the Clippers after previously leading the Toronto Raptors to an NBA championship during the 2018–19 season.

Kawhi Leonard began his career with the San Antonio Spurs after being selected 15th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. The seven-time All-Star and seven-time All-NBA selection helped the Spurs capture their fifth championship in 2014 after they defeated the Miami Heat in a four-game series.

Now, Leonard is set to join a Dallas Mavericks team that is currently far from championship contention. Dallas struggled last season, finishing with a 26-56 record — their worst campaign since the 2017-18 season. Leonard arrives after averaging a career-best 27.9 points per game, joining a Mavericks squad that ranked 23rd in the league in scoring.

Meanwhile, Klay Thompson is heading to his third team in four years. The four-time champion with the Golden State Warriors recorded a career-low 11.7 points per game and shot a career-worst 39.3% across 68 appearances last season. Before that, Thompson had never finished a season shooting below 41%.

Entering his 14th NBA season and the final year of his contract worth $17.4 million, Thompson will look to revive his form with the Los Angeles Clippers. The veteran sharpshooter joins a Clippers side that missed the playoffs for only the second time in the last eight seasons.
