Belgium achieved the seemingly impossible at the Seattle Stadium, staging a legendary comeback from 2-0 down with just five minutes of normal time remaining to defeat Senegal 3-2.

A dramatic Youri Tielemans penalty deep into stoppage time of extra time completed a historic footballing resurrection, sending the Red Devils into the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 16 just as they looked destined for a premature exit.

Senegal Stun the Red Devils

The Lions of Teranga started the match at a blistering pace, utilizing the explosive wings of Sadio Mané and Iliman Ndiaye to completely unnerve the Belgian defense. Senegal nearly drew first blood when Thibaut Courtois parried a deflected Ismail Jakobs cross into the path of Ismaïla Sarr, who managed to strike the post before sending the rebound wide.

The African giants finally reaped the rewards of their intense pressure in the 25th minute. Mané delivered a gorgeous, inswinging cross that allowed Sarr to outjump the Belgian center-backs. Though Sarr’s initial header struck the woodwork, Habib Diarra reacted quickest to blast home the rebound.

Things went from bad to worse for Belgium after the halftime interval. In the 51st minute, Senegalese center-back Moussa Niakhate launched a phenomenal, precise long ball over the top. Ismaïla Sarr controlled it beautifully with his chest, breezed past the backline, and confidently slotted it past Courtois to put Senegal 2-0 up.

Five Minutes of Pure Madness

With 85 minutes on the clock, Belgium looked dead and buried. Then, the substitutions sparked an unbelievable chain reaction.

In the 86th minute, Thomas Meunier found fellow substitute Romelu Lukaku, who expertly combined to tuck away a lifeline for the Red Devils. Suddenly sensing panic in the Senegalese ranks, Belgium poured forward. Just three minutes later, Leandro Trossard whipped in a lethal cross, and Youri Tielemans rose highest to head it home, sending the stadium into absolute bedlam and forcing extra time.

Tielemans Seals It from the Spot

With both sets of players completely exhausted in extra time, the match looked destined for the lottery of a penalty shootout. However, the World Cup drama had one final twist in store.

Deep into injury time of the second half of extra time (120+5′), Tielemans was brought down inside the penalty area. Following a tense VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot. Youri Tielemans stepped up himself with ice in his veins, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to secure an astonishing victory and break Senegalese hearts in the cruelest of fashions.

Belgium will now remain in Seattle for their Round of 16 clash on July 6th, where they will await the winner of the match between tournament hosts USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
