Red Devils Start Hot, Tillman Offers Brief Hope

From the opening whistle, Belgium exposed the vulnerabilities in Mauricio Pochettino’s backline. The celebrations, however, lasted a mere 116 seconds. Straight from the restart, Trossard once again turned provider from the left flank, picking out an unmarked De Ketelaere, who expertly directed his header past Freese to restore the Belgian lead.

Defensive Disaster Seals USA’s Fate

Any hopes Pochettino had of rallying his troops at halftime evaporated just before the hour mark due to a catastrophic miscommunication in the American defense.

USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese raced well out of his penalty box to clear a looping long ball but completely missed it. The predatory De Ketelaere stole possession and passed it back to Hans Vanaken. The midfielder looked up and launched a composed, long-range effort into the empty net, despite a desperate, sprawling attempt by veteran defender Tim Ream to block it.

Lukaku Puts the Exclamation Point

The USMNT did show late flashes of life. Substitute Sebastian Berhalter saw a powerful effort fly just wide of the post, and Thibaut Courtois had to be sharp to deny Folarin Balogun from inside the box.
