How Adam Wharton could still become one of the Premier League’s biggest transfer stories

Despite significant interest from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, Adam Wharton has remained at Crystal Palace throughout the summer.

The 22-year-old has never pushed for a move, while Palace have made it abundantly clear they have little interest in negotiating. Yet with several weeks still remaining in the transfer window, Wharton remains one of the market’s most intriguing names.

Palace’s stance has only hardened as transfer fees continue to rise.

The club already believed Wharton was among the most valuable young midfielders in England, and the reported £116 million move that saw Elliot Anderson join Manchester City has only reinforced that belief. Internally, Palace feel Wharton’s age, Premier League experience and long-term ceiling comfortably justify a valuation in the same bracket.

That asking price has inevitably caused several clubs to reconsider.

Tottenham Hotspur explored the possibility of signing Wharton earlier in the window before turning their attention elsewhere, completing deals for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali instead.

Manchester City have admired the England international for some time, but following Anderson’s arrival, their recruitment focus has shifted towards younger midfield prospects. Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez are now considered higher priorities.

There has also been long-standing admiration from Manchester United.

Although United remain keen on the midfielder, the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have eased the immediate need to pursue Wharton. Another central midfielder could still arrive before the deadline, but Palace’s valuation has made any potential deal extremely difficult.

While Arsenal have also been linked with the midfielder, their attention remains focused on Bruno Guimaraes.

Instead, Liverpool and Chelsea appear the two Premier League clubs most capable of reigniting the race if circumstances change before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool’s interest makes particular sense.

The Reds are still assessing midfield options, and Wharton ticks many of the boxes they are looking for. Having come through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers, the Lancashire-born midfielder is believed to be open to a return to the north-west when the right opportunity presents itself.

There could also be space in Arne Slot’s squad should Curtis Jones leave before the deadline, creating a vacancy in midfield.

Chelsea’s admiration for Wharton is equally well established, although whether they decide to commit significant funds to another midfielder remains uncertain. Much could depend on the future of Enzo Fernandez, who continues to attract interest.

There is also a growing feeling that Wharton could eventually become a target for Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants have closely monitored several of Europe’s leading midfielders, including Fernandez and Rodri, but Wharton is another player they rate highly. While no move appears imminent, Madrid’s admiration is genuine, and they cannot be ruled out in the future.

Wharton may have missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad, but that has done little to diminish his reputation.

The decision reflected Tuchel’s tactical preferences rather than any concerns over the midfielder’s quality, and Wharton continues to be viewed as one of England’s brightest young talents.

For now, Crystal Palace remain determined to keep hold of him.

With Europa League football awaiting after last season’s historic Europa Conference League triumph, the club see Wharton as a cornerstone of what could become one of the most important seasons in their recent history.

But transfer windows have a habit of changing quickly.

As clubs reassess their priorities and opportunities emerge, Adam Wharton remains one of the standout midfielders capable of dominating the headlines before the window finally closes.
