Scotland Goalkeeper Craig Gordon Announces Retirement After 25-Year Career

Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon has officially announced his retirement, bringing the curtain down on an outstanding playing career that spanned more than 25 years.

The 43-year-old enjoyed a remarkable journey across Scottish and English football, making 682 senior appearances for Hearts, Cowdenbeath, Sunderland, and Celtic. On the international stage, Gordon earned 84 caps for Scotland, establishing himself as one of the country’s most respected goalkeepers.

“I’ve never wanted it to end, but end it must. I have lived my dreams and for that I am so thankful,” Gordon said in a heartfelt video shared on social media to confirm his retirement.

Despite not featuring on the pitch, Gordon was part of Scotland’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, becoming the oldest player at the tournament. He served as an experienced backup to Angus Gunn, providing valuable leadership and support throughout the competition.

A graduate of the Hearts youth academy, Gordon made his senior debut during a loan spell with Cowdenbeath in 2001 before cementing his place in Hearts’ first team the following season.

In 2007, he completed a high-profile move to Sunderland for a reported £9 million, setting a British record transfer fee for a goalkeeper at the time. Although injuries disrupted his five-year stay at the Stadium of Light, he still made 95 appearances for the Premier League club.

Gordon returned to Scotland in 2014 after signing for Celtic, where he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career. During six seasons in Glasgow, he lifted five Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups, and five Scottish League Cups, playing a key role in one of the club’s most dominant eras.

In 2020, Gordon made an emotional return to Hearts, the club where his professional journey began. He continued to perform at a high level before ultimately calling time on a career defined by resilience, consistency, and success.

Widely regarded as one of Scotland’s finest goalkeepers of the modern era, Gordon leaves the game with an impressive legacy, having excelled for club and country while overcoming significant injury setbacks to enjoy a career that lasted more than two decades.
