Andoni Iraola Explains Why Liverpool Won’t Seek a Like-for-Like Mohamed Salah Replacement

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has admitted replacing Mohamed Salah will be one of the club’s biggest challenges this summer, insisting the Reds are not looking for a direct copy of the Egyptian superstar.

Iraola, who signed a two-year contract to succeed Arne Slot, has vowed to build “a team the fans can be proud of” as he begins a new chapter at Anfield following a disappointing, trophyless campaign last season.

The Reds have already strengthened their squad with the signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna, but they have also seen several experienced players depart. Alongside Salah, defenders Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson have moved on as Liverpool continue their squad rebuild.

Salah leaves behind an extraordinary legacy after making 442 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 257 goals and providing 120 assists across all competitions. His remarkable consistency and match-winning performances cemented his status as one of the greatest players in the club’s history.

Speaking about the search for a successor, Iraola acknowledged that replacing a player of Salah’s calibre is impossible and suggested Liverpool will instead target someone capable of bringing different qualities to the squad.

“I think it’s one of the challenges when I arrived. We cannot expect to sign a winger who is going to replace Mo Salah because otherwise we are preparing him to fail almost.

“Obviously we need someone in that area, but they will probably have different skills. They can complement the team in another way, and we are definitely working on it.”

Liverpool will travel to the United States next Monday for their pre-season tour, where they are scheduled to face Sunderland, Wrexham, and Leeds United as preparations for the new campaign gather pace.

While the search for a new winger remains a priority, reports suggest supporters may have to wait a little longer before the club completes another major signing.
