Ajax complete surprise signing of German star Julian Brandt

Ajax have confirmed the unexpected signing of Julian Brandt, with the experienced German international arriving in Amsterdam on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract with Borussia Dortmund.

The versatile attacker has signed a three-year contract with the Dutch giants, bringing an end to his successful spell in the Bundesliga after six seasons at Dortmund.

Julian Brandt chooses Ajax despite other offers

Brandt’s move has caught many by surprise, with speculation in recent weeks largely focused on Marc-Andre ter Stegen potentially joining Ajax from Barcelona.

Instead, the Eredivisie side have secured the services of the 30-year-old, who reportedly had interest from several clubs before deciding that Ajax was the right destination for the next chapter of his career.

Speaking after the announcement, technical director Jordi Cruyff expressed his delight at completing the deal.

“Julian has chosen Ajax, and we are absolutely delighted about that. We’ve been speaking for several months, and despite interest from other clubs, he believed Ajax was the best fit. His international experience, quality and mentality will make him a valuable addition to our squad.”

Brandt’s Borussia Dortmund career comes to an end

Brandt leaves Borussia Dortmund after establishing himself as one of the club’s most consistent creative players.

Since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019, he made 307 appearances across all competitions, scoring 57 goals while contributing 65 assists.

The German international also enjoyed another productive campaign last season, registering 11 goals and four assists in 41 appearances, underlining the attacking threat he still possesses.

Across his international career, Brandt has earned 48 caps for Germany, adding valuable experience to Ajax’s youthful squad.

Ajax summer transfers continue under Jordi Cruyff

Brandt becomes Ajax’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window as Jordi Cruyff continues to reshape the squad ahead of the new campaign.

He joins fellow arrivals Daley Blind, Caio Henrique, Marcos Leonardo, and Tolu Arokodare, with Ajax determined to rebuild after a disappointing domestic season.

Ajax aiming for a return to the top

The Dutch giants endured one of the most difficult league campaigns in their modern history last season, finishing fifth in the Eredivisie with 63 points. It matched the club’s lowest league finish since 1963 and forced them to qualify for the UEFA Conference League through the play-offs.

In an effort to spark a revival, Ajax appointed former Girona head coach Michel in June, with the Spaniard already overseeing encouraging progress.

The Amsterdam club have booked their place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League after comfortably defeating Serbian side Vojvodina Novi Sad 8-2 on aggregate.

With the arrival of Brandt adding creativity, leadership and proven top-level experience, Ajax will hope the German playmaker can play a key role in guiding the club back into contention for domestic honours and European success.
