Stellenbosch FC have continued their squad rebuilding efforts by completing the signing of young defender Gopolang Taunyana from Kaizer Chiefs, marking another deal between the two clubs in recent days.

The 20-year-old centre-back becomes the latest player to move from Naturena to the Cape Winelands, following the arrivals of striker Ashley du Preez and defender Given Msimango. George Matlou also made the switch earlier in the transfer window, further strengthening the connection between the two clubs.

The recent departures come after highly rated winger Langelihle Phili moved in the opposite direction, joining Kaizer Chiefs from Stellenbosch.

Taunyana, who represented Chiefs at youth level, progressed through the club’s development system but did not manage to make a senior appearance for Amakhosi before his move.

Speaking after completing his transfer, the young defender expressed his excitement about joining Stellenbosch and praised the club’s reputation for developing talented players.

“Stellenbosch is a club known for its development, excellent facilities and quality coaching, so I’m grateful for this opportunity,” Taunyana said.

“For me, the most important thing is continuing to grow as both a player and a person. I believe this is the right move for my career and the right environment to improve. Many players have developed and achieved success here, and I’m excited to begin my own journey.”

Taunyana added that his ambitions extend beyond personal development, highlighting his desire to help Stellenbosch compete for major honours and create a successful future together.

“For any team, the greatest satisfaction comes from competing against the best, winning trophies and achieving success collectively. Hopefully, one day I can look back and say we accomplished those goals together,” he said.

The young defender arrives with international experience, having been part of the South Africa Under-20 squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations title in Egypt last year.

Taunyana becomes Stellenbosch’s 12th new arrival as coach Gavin Hunt continues to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.

The Cape side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against AmaZulu in their opening Betway Premiership fixture. The match was originally scheduled as a home game but was moved to Durban due to the lack of suitable venues in the Western Cape.

Stellenbosch will look to bounce back when they travel to face Polokwane City on Tuesday.
