Lionel Messi produced another standout performance on Wednesday, scoring twice as Inter Miami defeated Atletico San Luis 4-2 in their opening group-stage match of the 2026 Leagues Cup.

The Argentine star also became the competition’s all-time leading scorer, increasing his Leagues Cup tally to 14 goals. Messi first lifted the trophy with Inter Miami in 2023, shortly after joining the MLS club, and continues to make history in the tournament featuring teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Liga MX.

Atletico San Luis made a dream start, taking the lead in the fourth minute through David Rodriguez. However, Messi restored parity just seven minutes later with a composed finish.

Inter Miami completed the turnaround before the break when Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia found the back of the net in the 26th minute to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

Messi added his second goal just before the interval to put Inter Miami firmly in control, before Brazilian defender Micael extended the lead to 4-1 in first-half stoppage time with a well-taken finish.

Atletico San Luis pulled a goal back after the break through Rafa Llorente, but the visitors were unable to mount a comeback as Miami comfortably saw out the victory.

Elsewhere in the Leagues Cup on Wednesday, FC Dallas secured a 2-0 win over Queretaro, while Leon edged Nashville 1-0 to begin their campaign with three points.
