De Zerbi surprised by Tottenham’s activity in the transfer market

After helping Tottenham Hotspur avoid a disastrous end to last season, manager Roberto De Zerbi challenged the club’s owners to build him the squad he wanted for the new campaign.
It appears that request has been taken seriously.
Tottenham have invested more than £300 million ($407 million) during the summer transfer window, while their attack received another major boost this week with the arrivals of Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City.
Despite the huge spending, Tottenham were given an early reality check when they suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening day of the Premier League season.
However, De Zerbi remains pleased with the club’s transfer business and has suggested that another signing could still arrive before the window closes.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Newcastle United, De Zerbi admitted he had not anticipated such an ambitious transfer window when he took charge.
“I didn’t expect a transfer window like we have done,” De Zerbi told reporters.
The Italian coach arrived with just seven matches remaining last season, with Tottenham facing the serious threat of relegation. Since then, the club’s hierarchy has backed him heavily in the transfer market.
De Zerbi also revealed that discussions with the club’s owners and senior executives had taken place regarding another potential addition.
“All of us are on the same page and have a very good connection.”
Savio and Marmoush Add Firepower
Brazilian winger Savio, who joined Tottenham in a deal worth around £75 million, made an immediate impact on Wednesday, scoring on his debut during Tottenham’s 5-1 League Cup victory over Charlton Athletic.
He is expected to feature alongside Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush, who initially joined on loan with a £50 million permanent transfer reportedly scheduled for next summer.
De Zerbi is excited about what Marmoush can bring to his attack.
“Great signing for us, great player. Another great player. Everyone of us loves him as a player and we hope he can do what he is able to,” the Tottenham boss said.
De Zerbi was particularly enthusiastic when describing the club’s two latest attacking additions.
“I think Savio and Marmoush are bomba. I don’t know what name you want to call them.”
More Signings Could Still Arrive
Tottenham have also been linked with a move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, suggesting that their summer recruitment drive may not be finished yet.
Although De Zerbi believes it is strange that the transfer window remains open after the season has already started, he is more than happy with the business Tottenham have completed.
Among Tottenham’s other major summer additions are midfielders Sandro Tonali, signed from Newcastle United, and Mateus Fernandes, who arrived from West Ham United. The club have also strengthened their defence with the signing of centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The challenge for De Zerbi now is to turn Tottenham’s expensive collection of new arrivals into a cohesive team capable of competing at the highest level.
The club’s owners have certainly demonstrated ambition in the transfer market. Whether that investment can translate into consistent performances and results on the pitch, however, remains to be seen.
