Iraola delighted as Liverpool begin Champions League campaign with victory
Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola said it would be difficult to have asked for more from his Champions League coaching debut after the Reds came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield.
Liverpool endured a difficult start when Marcos Llorente put the visitors ahead, scoring his fifth goal in three appearances at Anfield.
The hosts responded before half-time, with Dominik Szoboszlai finding the equaliser before Alexis Mac Allister completed the comeback with a powerful second-half strike to give Liverpool a winning start to their UEFA Champions League campaign.
“It’s difficult to ask for more,” said Iraola, who was experiencing European football’s premier competition as a coach for the first time.
“I’ve loved it. The atmosphere has been incredible and I feel lucky, lucky to experience it.”
Barcola Injury Concern
Liverpool’s comeback victory appeared to come with a concern when new signing Bradley Barcola was forced off around the hour mark.
However, Iraola played down fears surrounding the £123 million arrival from Paris Saint-Germain, explaining that the winger had suffered from cramp after making his first start of the season.
“We want him there, but at the end we’ve decided today, okay, give us whatever you have.”
Liverpool will now look to build on their impressive European start as Iraola prepares his side for another quick turnaround.
