Paolo Vanoli celebrated his return to the Fiorentina dugout with a 4-2 victory away at Venezia, as Franco Mastantuono’s hat-trick helped La Viola claim their first Serie A points of the season and climb off the bottom of the table.

Both teams created chances during an entertaining opening, with John Yeboah heading wide for the hosts while Mastantuono saw a close-range effort blocked. Cher Ndour then fired into the side netting from a difficult angle, before Alex Jiménez narrowly missed the target with a delicate attempt.

Despite Fiorentina creating several opportunities, Venezia broke the deadlock against the run of play midway through the first half.

Gianluca Busio burst through the middle before laying the ball off to Akor Adams, who produced a powerful first-time right-footed finish into the far corner. The strike marked his first goal in the Italian top flight.

Venezia’s advantage lasted only a few minutes, as Fiorentina turned the game around before the half-hour mark with two goals from Mastantuono in the space of just two minutes.

The Real Madrid loanee first cut inside from the right before unleashing a fierce left-footed strike into the bottom-left corner. Moments later, he capitalised on a loose ball and calmly placed his second effort into the opposite corner via the post, leaving Venezia goalkeeper Filip Stankovic with no chance despite his desperate attempt to keep it out.

Fiorentina had a chance to extend their advantage shortly before half-time, but Alieu Njie, who is still waiting for his first goal for the club, was denied by Stankovic after being played through on goal.

After the break, Fiorentina had to withstand a spell of pressure from Venezia before delivering a decisive blow on the counter with less than 25 minutes remaining.

Substitute Mateo Pellegrino scored in consecutive matches after latching onto a clearance from Nicolo Fagioli inside Fiorentina’s own half. The forward raced into space before calmly slotting a left-footed finish into the bottom corner.

Venezia continued to search for a response, with Thorir Johann Helgason forcing David de Gea into a save from distance.

However, Fiorentina soon put the result beyond doubt as Mastantuono completed his hat-trick.

The Argentine midfielder raced onto a lofted pass from Ndour and saw his initial effort saved by Stankovic, but the rebound came straight back off the 19-year-old and rolled into the net to complete a memorable treble.

The scoring was not over yet, though, as Antoine Hainaut pulled another goal back for Venezia with just three minutes remaining. The midfielder connected with a powerful right-footed volley that flew past De Gea and gave the hosts a glimmer of hope.

However, Venezia’s late push could not change the outcome, with the damage already done. Giovanni Stroppa’s side have now conceded at least two goals in all six of their matches this season.

Fiorentina, meanwhile, ended a five-game losing streak in Serie A away meetings between the sides in convincing fashion. The defeat leaves Venezia rooted to the bottom of the table, while Fiorentina finally have their first league points of the campaign.
