Denmark Continue Remarkable Rise With European Championship Victory Over Netherlands

The Danish men’s national volleyball team continued its remarkable rise on Saturday with an impressive 3-0 victory over the Netherlands at the European Championship in Finland.

Denmark produced a dominant performance to claim the match in straight sets, winning 25-17, 25-20 and 25-20.

Rasmus Mikelsons and Ulrik Dahl played key roles during the contest, delivering a series of powerful smashes at crucial moments as the third set reached a tense conclusion.

The victory comes just two days after Denmark opened its European Championship campaign with a defeat against the Finnish hosts. Despite that setback, the Danes bounced back in style against a Netherlands side ranked 21st in the world, compared with Denmark’s 30th-place ranking.

Denmark Facing Tough European Championship Group

Denmark has been handed a difficult group at the European Championship, with the team facing opponents ranked higher in the world standings.

The remaining teams in the group are Estonia, Belgium and Serbia, setting up a challenging battle for qualification to the next stage.

To advance, Denmark must finish among the top four teams in the group.

Before the tournament, Sports Director Sebastian Mikelsons said reaching the knockout stage would represent the biggest achievement in the history of Danish men’s volleyball.

Denmark Building Momentum

Saturday’s victory is the latest milestone in what has been an impressive period of growth for Danish volleyball.

Last summer, Denmark won a European Championship qualifying pool for the first time, finishing ahead of Turkey — a team that later reached the quarter-finals of the 2025 World Championship.

The Danes also enjoyed a perfect run in this summer’s European League, winning all six of their matches during the league phase.

One of those victories came against the Czech Republic, who went on to finish fourth at the World Championship.

Victory Could Boost Denmark’s World Ranking

The win over the Netherlands provides Denmark with another significant result on the international stage and is expected to improve the team’s position in the world rankings.

That could prove particularly valuable as Denmark prepares for the upcoming World Championship qualifiers, where a stronger ranking could put the team in a more favourable position.

For a Danish side that has made significant progress in recent years, Saturday’s 3-0 victory represents another important step forward.
