Medvedev overcomes Tsitsipas to reach Shanghai masters quarter-finals as Paul and Ruud Advance

Daniil Medvedev secured his place in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals on Wednesday with a straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, setting up a last-eight clash with American Tommy Paul.

The fifth-seeded Russian delivered a composed performance, defeating Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5 without facing a single break point throughout the match.

“I felt like I was playing very well today,” Medvedev said after the win.

“I put a lot of pressure on him in the first set.”

The 30-year-old acknowledged that the second set presented a tougher challenge but was pleased with how he handled the decisive moments.

“Second set different story. Very tight one. I’m happy that I managed… to get some good returns, get some good rhythm,” he added.

Medvedev broke Tsitsipas’ serve to take a 6-5 lead in the second set before serving out the match in one hour and 24 minutes.

The encounter marked the 16th meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Medvedev strengthening his advantage in their head-to-head record to 11 victories.

The Russian, who lifted the Shanghai Masters title in 2019, will now turn his attention to Paul as he looks to continue his run in the tournament.

Paul booked his quarter-final place by defeating Belgian Zizou Bergs 7-6(5), 6-4. Bergs had produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises in the previous round by eliminating second seed Carlos Alcaraz.

Reflecting on the challenge, Paul acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining momentum after such an impressive victory.

“I know sometimes it’s hard to back up a big win,” the American said.

Although Bergs raised his level in the second set and fought back from a 0-4 deficit to close the gap, Paul maintained his composure to secure the win and progress to the last eight.

Jodar Sets Up Quarter-Final Clash With Ruud

Rising Spanish talent Rafael Jodar also advanced to the quarter-finals after battling past Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets, winning 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2.

However, Jodar’s victory was not without controversy. The Spaniard received a code violation during the second set after reportedly swearing at a ball boy in Spanish while requesting a towel.

Jodar will next face Norway’s Casper Ruud, who advanced after fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was forced to retire with an apparent knee injury.

Auger-Aliassime withdrew while trailing 2-5 in the opening set. Ruud, currently ranked 24th in the world, suggested that the Canadian’s physical problems began around the fourth game.

“It seemed to me that he maybe twisted his knee… it looked like he kind of stumbled a bit with a wrong step,” Ruud told reporters.

“From that moment it seemed like he was in a lot of pain,” the Norwegian added.

Auger-Aliassime took a medical timeout after the fifth game before continuing with white strapping around his left knee. However, he was ultimately unable to complete the match.

With Medvedev, Paul, Jodar and Ruud securing their places in the last eight, the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals are beginning to take shape as the remaining contenders continue their pursuit of the ATP Tour title.
