Rafael Câmara joins Haas for Formula 1 debut, replacing Esteban Ocon

Brazilian racing prospect Rafael Câmara will step up to Formula 1 next season after signing a multi-year contract with Haas, the American-owned team confirmed on Thursday.

The 21-year-old, a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, has impressed in the junior categories and currently leads the Formula 2 championship with two rounds remaining. Câmara previously demonstrated his potential by winning the Formula 3 title last season.

His promotion will make him the second Brazilian driver on the Formula 1 grid, joining Gabriel Bortoleto, who currently competes for Audi.

Câmara will replace Frenchman Esteban Ocon, whose departure from Haas was announced last month. British driver Oliver Bearman, another graduate of the Ferrari Driver Academy, is expected to remain with the team.

The announcement also represents a setback for Australian Jack Doohan, Haas’s reserve driver, who had been hoping to secure a return to a full-time race seat following his departure from Alpine last year.

Haas Excited by Câmara’s Potential

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu expressed his enthusiasm about signing the young Brazilian, highlighting his impressive performances and ability to handle pressure throughout the junior categories.

“I’m really excited to sign such a young, amazing talent,” Komatsu said in a team statement.

“I don’t need to tell everyone about his achievements in the junior formulas; it’s been very impressive, and in his rookie season in Formula 2, the speed he’s shown in some very difficult moments, like qualifying in Monaco and Montreal — that all goes to show the potential Rafa has.”

Komatsu also praised Câmara’s performances during testing, explaining that the youngster had demonstrated more than just outright speed when given the opportunity to drive Haas machinery.

“He showed when we had him drive in our TPC (Testing of Previous Car) program in Portugal that he could handle himself very well with not a huge amount of time to learn the car; he showed us more than just raw speed,” he added.

“Rafa managed to create an environment to get the best out of himself; it was very impressive and certainly the laps he completed were special.”

Câmara tested Haas’s VF-25 car at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão in August. He has also gained valuable experience testing with Ferrari as he prepares for the next stage of his career.

Câmara Focused on Formula 1 Challenge

The Brazilian currently leads Nikola Tsolov, the Bulgarian driver supported by Red Bull, by seven points in the Formula 2 standings.

With his move to Formula 1 now confirmed, Câmara said he was looking forward to working closely with Haas and adapting to the demands of the sport’s highest level.

“There will be a lot to learn, and I’m looking forward to working closely with the team, understanding the car and continuing to develop as a driver,” he said.

The transition will present a significant challenge, with Câmara needing to adapt to Formula 1 machinery, work alongside experienced engineers and compete against some of the world’s leading drivers.

Haas Preparing for the Next Chapter

Haas currently sits seventh in the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship, with 30 points ahead of next week’s United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

Bearman has contributed 23 of the team’s 30 points, underlining his importance to Haas’s campaign.

With Câmara set to join Bearman next season, the team will be looking to build a competitive driver line-up while continuing its development in Formula 1.

The signing marks an important milestone for Câmara, who will arrive in the championship after a successful rise through the junior ranks and with considerable expectations surrounding his potential.
