Caicedo aims to justify Alonso’s confidence at Chelsea

Caicedo determined to repay Alonso’s trust and become a Chelsea leader
Moises Caicedo is determined to repay the confidence shown in him by Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso by taking on greater leadership responsibilities on the pitch.
The 24-year-old midfielder made his first start under Alonso after recovering from an injury in Chelsea’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.
Although Caicedo is already part of the leadership group at the club’s Cobham training ground, the Ecuador international wants to become more vocal during matches and make a stronger impact on his teammates.
“With Xabi I am going to keep developing, for sure, and show him why he trusts me,” Caicedo told Chelsea’s official website.
“I think every coach tells me that I can improve talking on the pitch, you know? Because they know that I’m a leader, but it will be better for me if I start talking more with the players.
“I try my best, but it’s not in my nature. So when I’m not able to talk, I just try to show even more.”
Caicedo also highlighted the influence of former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva, whose leadership and experience provided an example for the squad.
“You learn from the previous ones, like Thiago Silva; he was an example for us,” the midfielder added.
“He tried to help us in every moment. How he was a leader here was amazing for all of us.”
Taking on a leadership role at Chelsea has also become a source of personal pride for Caicedo and his family. Despite admitting that he is not naturally outspoken, the midfielder believes his performances and attitude can inspire those around him.
“Now being one of the captains is a pleasure for me, and a special feeling for my family. Even if I’m not a player who likes to talk a lot, I like to show through what I do, so others can see my example,” he said.
Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League standings, eight points behind leaders Manchester City. Alonso’s side will look to build on their convincing win when they travel to face Everton on Saturday.
