Sonay Kartal produced a remarkable performance to defeat Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5) at the Wuhan Open on Saturday, becoming the lowest-ranked player ever to reach a WTA 1000 final.
Ranked world No. 170, the 24-year-old Briton overcame the former French Open champion in a fiercely contested semi-final to make history and become the first British player to reach the Wuhan Open final.
Kartal’s achievement is particularly impressive given her recent injury struggles. She is competing in only her second tour-level tournament since returning from a six-month absence caused by a spinal stress fracture, which kept her sidelined from March until September.
Having previously climbed to a career-high ranking of world No. 44, Kartal has now reached the biggest final of her career, setting a new milestone at the highest level of the WTA Tour.
The semi-final against the 2017 French Open champion proved to be a demanding test, with Ostapenko unleashing 50 winners. However, Kartal demonstrated exceptional composure under pressure, finding a way through despite several difficult moments.
“Wow, that was probably one of the toughest matches I’ve ever played,” Kartal said after the victory.
“I knew exactly how she was going to play. At times she’s unplayable and sometimes you just have to ride that wave.
“Mentally I think this is one of the best performances I’ve had in my career. I’m very proud of that one.”
Kartal entered the semi-final in impressive form after eliminating three seeded opponents in successive rounds, including sixth seed Elina Svitolina and ninth seed Belinda Bencic. Ostapenko, ranked 35th in the world, became her latest high-profile victim.
The opening set lasted 72 minutes and featured several momentum swings. Kartal fought back from a double-break deficit before saving two set points in the tie-break to claim the opener and put herself within reach of the final.
The Briton showed similar resilience in the second set, recovering from a 4-1 deficit and saving three more set points to keep her hopes alive. She eventually prevailed in another tie-break, sealing a straight-sets victory and a place in the championship match.
Kartal will now face either Iga Swiatek or fellow Polish player Maja Chwalińska in the final, as she looks to cap her impressive comeback with the biggest title of her career.
Regardless of the final result, her run in Wuhan represents a significant achievement for the British star, who has overcome injury setbacks to reach the biggest stage of her professional career.
