Farke Backs Carrick amid criticism ahead of Leeds vs Manchester United clash

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has defended Michael Carrick, praising the Manchester United boss for his work despite mounting criticism ahead of their Premier League meeting at Elland Road on Sunday, October 18.

Leeds have made a promising start to the campaign, collecting nine points from their opening six Premier League matches to sit seventh in the standings. Their early-season progress has also reportedly put Farke in a strong position to negotiate a new contract with the West Yorkshire club.

The situation is considerably more difficult for Carrick, whose Manchester United side have struggled for consistency in the opening weeks of the season. A 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid in midweek has added to the pressure surrounding the manager ahead of Sunday’s encounter.

United have recorded just one league victory, a 5-2 win over newly promoted Ipswich Town, and only two wins across all competitions, leaving Carrick under increasing scrutiny.

However, Farke believes the criticism directed at his counterpart is premature, highlighting Carrick’s previous achievements and calling for greater support for young British managers.

“When I think about Michael, we don’t have too many young British coaches and managers in the Premier League,” Farke told reporters.

“Right now we have someone, a really young, promising manager who’s done an excellent job at Middlesbrough, and he came in last season in a situation and helped a lot to stabilise the club, helped a lot to steady the ship, and has done an amazing job.”

Farke also questioned the speed with which criticism had emerged, pointing out that only six league matches had been played.

“After six game days, when they didn’t have a horrendous start but, of course, by their perception they want to fight for the title, the criticism starts already. I don’t like it,” he added.

The Leeds manager stressed the importance of supporting emerging English and British coaching talent, arguing that promising managers should be given time to establish themselves rather than being judged too quickly.

“If we have young, promising managers, let’s also look a bit after them, especially ones that have a British passport,” Farke said.

He also highlighted Carrick’s long-standing connection with Manchester United as a former player and his willingness to step into a difficult situation last season.

“Keep in mind what he has done for the club for many years as a player, what he has done last season in a very difficult situation where many people would also be a bit hesitant, more or less like to, to step in and to help. He has done a top-class job.”

With Leeds United vs Manchester United approaching, Carrick will be eager to respond on the pitch and ease the pressure surrounding his position. Meanwhile, Farke will hope his side can build on their encouraging start and strengthen their place in the Premier League table.

The clash at Elland Road promises to be a significant test for both managers, with Leeds looking to maintain their momentum and Manchester United aiming to turn their difficult run around.
